This week’s news

Tipperary Senior Hurlers
Well done to the Senior Hurlers who produced an impressive display last Sunday in Glenisk O’Connor Park Tullamore overcoming Offaly on a 5-24 to 1-18 scoreline. Playing against the wind in the first half Tipperary still held a 2-12 to 1-10 advantage at the interval. Excellent build up play from Josh Keller and Andrew Ormond paved the way for Paddy McCormack to raise the green flag in the 10th minute. Offaly responded through Brian Duignan who struck their only goal of the game in the 18th minute to narrow the deficit. Tipperary finished the half strongly with Jason Forde converting a penalty in the 28th minute to give Tipp a crucial cushion heading into the break. John McGrath extended Tipperary’s lead with a third goal early in the second half and Forde followed up with his second ten minutes later. The Silvermines man completed his hat trick late on rounding off an excellent individual performance and a personal tally of 3-10 as Tipperary ran out convincing winners.

Tipperary Scorers: Jason Forde 3-10 (1gl pen, 5f, 2 ’65s), John McGrath 1-1, Paddy McCormack 1-0, Conor Stakelum 0-3, Jack Leamy 0-3, Josh Keller 0-2, Darragh Stakelum 0-2, Conor Martin 0-1, Gearoid O’Connor 0-1, Noel McGrath 0-1.

Tipperary: Barry Hogan; C. O’Reilly, B. O’Mara, J. Ryan; C. Martin, C. Morgan, S. Kennedy; W. Connors, C. Stakelum; J. Keller, A. Ormond, G. O’Connor; J. Leamy, P. McCormack, J. Forde.

Subs: D. Stakelum for J. Keller (HT), J. McGrath for P. McCormack (HT), N. McGrath for A. Ormond (45), A. Daly for C. Morgan (50), C. English for C. Stakelum (60).

The hurlers’ next game takes place this coming Saturday 7th February at 7.30pm when they make the familiar trip to SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh to face Cork. At the time of going to print only terrace tickets were available for the game and these can be purchased on Ticketmaster or at participating SuperValu or Centra stores. The game will also be broadcast live on RTÉ.
Looking back at their last five league meetings, the sides met twice in last year’s league, with Cork claiming the league title over the Premier in the Final, while Tipperary were victorious in the group stages. Prior to that, the teams drew in 2021 with the score Tipperary 0-22 Cork 2-16. Cork got the better of Tipperary in 2020, winning 2-24 to 1-25 while the 2019 encounter saw Tipperary victorious, 1-29 to 1-16. Overall, it has been evenly balanced between the sides with two wins each and one draw.

Tipperary Senior Footballers
Well done to the Senior footballers who recorded a hard earned 1-13 to 1-9 victory over Antrim last Sunday in Moneygall.
The sides were level at 0-5 apiece at half time. A Cian Smith free just before the break ensured parity at the interval and Tipperary carried an advantage into the second half – playing with the wind and with an extra man after Antrim’s John Carron received a red card on the stroke of half time.
Tipperary made the perfect start to the second half as the impressive Daithi Hogan struck for the game’s opening goal. A Paddy McAleer goal midway through the half reduced Tipperary’s lead to a single point, but they pushed on to secure a deserved victory with Sean O’Connor leading the scoring for the Premier.
The game had originally been fixed for FBD Semple Stadium, but with the pitch deemed unplayable, sincere thanks go to the Moneygall club for hosting the fixture.

Tipperary Scorers: Sean O’Connor 0-7 (5f), Daithi Hogan 1-3 (1m), Cian Smith 0-3 (3f).

Tipperary: S. Garland; J. Harney, J. Morris, E. O’Connell; C. King, P. Feehan, L. Boland; J. Higgins, K. Costello; M. Stokes, S. O’Brien, M. Freaney; C. Smith, S. O’Connor, D. Hogan.

Subs: M. Russell for Higgins (58), K. Butler for King (58), C. Deely for O’Brien (58), P. O’Keeffe for Smith (63), J. O’Neill for Stokes (68).

The Footballers have a break in action this coming weekend with their next game scheduled for Sunday 15th February at home to Carlow in FBD Semple Stadium with a 2.00 pm throw in time.

Schools
Congratulations to Nenagh CBS who claimed their second ever Dr. Harty Cup title after an exciting 0-20 to 0-18 victory over St. Flannan’s last Saturday in Zimmer Biomet Páirc Chíosóg, Ennis. The sides were level at 0-11 each at half time in a game that was tit for tat with little separating two quality teams. The winning moment of the game came between the 50th and 55th minute when Nenagh hit three points without reply thanks to Eoghan Doughan (2 frees) and Patrick Hackett. Despite late pressure from a gallant St. Flannan’s side Nenagh held out for a famous victory. Nenagh captain and lead scorer Eoghan Doughan from Moneygall lifted the Dr. Harty Cup after the game.
It is a fantastic achievement for Tipperary to have produced the last four Dr. Harty Cup winners: Cashel Community School in 2023, Thurles CBS last year and Nenagh CBS claiming the title in 2024 and again this year. Well done to all schools across the county for the tremendous work being put in across hurling and football.

Congratulations to St. Joseph’s Borrisoleigh who claimed the TUS Corn Risteard Uí Mhathúna Munster Under 19 ‘C’ Hurling title last Friday in Fethard after a thrilling 2-18 to 1-20 victory over a gallant Dungarvan CBS side. The Tipperary school trailed 1-9 to 0-14 at half time with Borris-Ileigh clubman Cathal Kennedy registering their opening goal. An early second half goal from Eoghan Anderson gave St. Joseph’s the perfect start after the break. In what was an excellent contest throughout, Dungarvan netted a goal from a free with the final puck of the game but St. Joseph’s held firm to be crowned champions. Micheal Collins of Templederry Kenyons was the victorious captain.

May be an image of football

Best of luck to CBS High School Clonmel footballers as they take on Tralee CBS this coming Saturday 7th February at 1.30 pm in Mallow in the TUS Corn Uí Mhuirí Munster Senior ‘A’ Football Championship Final. Their only final appearance since then came in 2016, when they were defeated by a David Clifford led St Brendan’s, Killarney side that went on to comfortably claim the Hogan Cup All Ireland title.
The Abbey Tipperary footballers won’t be out until next week as they face Mount Saint Michael Rosscarbery on Friday 13th February in the Final of the TUS Corn Dhonncha Uí Nuanáin Under 19 ‘B’ Football Championship.
