Tipperary GAA Scene - February 22nd 2023

Allianz Football League

Tipperary welcomed Antrim to FBD Semple Stadium last Saturday evening for their Round 3 clash in the Allianz Football League. With his side still to register their first points of the league campaign, Tipperary manager David Power would have been hoping to get back to winning ways in this home tie. However, it was not to be for the premier men as Antrim proved to be much stronger on the night as they recorded a well deserved 1-19 to 0-14 win. This result now means that Tipperary will most likely need to win all their remaining games in the group to secure Division 3 status in 2024. Attention now turns to next Sunday and an away clash with Longford in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park at 2pm. Tickets for this game are now available via the tickets section of the GAA website and also in selected Centra and Supervalu stores.

Allianz Hurling League

Our senior hurlers will travel to Croke Park this Saturday evening where they will play Dublin at 5pm in Round 3 of the Allianz Hurling League. Having recorded two wins from two so far in the campaign, the players and management will be anxious to keep their winning run going. Having picked up a number of injuries in the league game against Kilkenny, this game will once again give an opportunity to some of the newer panel members to put their hand up for a permanent starting place on the team.

There have been 37 previous League meetings. Tipp won 22,Dublin 11 and there were 4 draws. Last six games resulted –

GAA Annual Congress

The yearly GAA congress took place last weekend in Croke Park with one of the main items on the agenda being the election of a new Uachtarán Tofa of the association. Voting took place on Friday evening and resulted in a very comprehensive victory for Armagh’s Jarlath Burns. We congratulate Jarlath on his victory and we wish him every success over the coming years. Congress also saw a large number of motions down for decision, motions included topics such as discipline, age grades and player eligibility and details of all motions are available on the GAA website. This year’s congress also saw a changing of the guard for Tipperary as Holycross Ballycahill’s Johnny Doyle took over from Michael Bourke as our central council delegate. This was an historic occasion for Johnny who follows in his fathers footsteps as a member of the GAA’s central council. We wish Johnny well over the course of his term on central council and we also thank Michael Bourke for the service he has given to Tipperary over many years of involvement.

Munster Junior B Football Semi Final

Best wishes to the Kilruane MacDonaghs Junior footballers who take on Diarmuid O’Mathunas from Cork for the right to qualify for this year’s final against Kerry side Kilgarvan. The game takes place this Sunday 26th February at 2:00pm in Knockaderry GAA grounds. The Eircode for Knockaderry GAA grounds V42 WC61, the entrance fee for supporters for all games is €10 which includes match programme and tea / light refreshments in the local Halla post-match. The advice from the organising committee is to get there early to avoid delays.

The Dillon Quirke Foundation Senior Hurling Challenge

Last Sunday February 19th was a very special day in FBD Semple Stadium as the Tipperary and Kilkenny senior hurlers played a challenge in aid of the Dillon Quirke Foundation. A large crowd were in attendance for the game and there was also a big take up of the non-attendance tickets and the streaming. At half time the Tipperary Supporters Club Hurler of the Year 2022 Award, which was won by Dillon Quirke, was presented to Dillon’s family.

The Annual Award, again kindly sponsored by John Quirke Jewellers, Cahir, was presented to Kellie Quirke, Dillon’s sister, by Terry O’Neill, Chair of the Tipperary Supporters Club.

The perpetual Tony Reddin Cup was presented to Kellie Quirke by Joe Tuohy, Tipperary Supporters Club committee member and native of Clonoulty Rossmore. Flowers were also presented to Kellie Quirke and to Hazel Quirke, Dillon’s mother.

In addition, a video of the 1989 All Ireland Under 21 Hurling Final courtesy of Brendan Kerins, Premier Video Productions, was presented by John Quirke who also did the commentary on the match. Dan Quirke, Dillon’s father scored three goals in that final, helping Tipperary beat Offaly. A presentation of a cheque for €18,400 was also presented by the four divisional boards who organised a under 21 hurling tournaments in both the A and B grades. The games were played earlier in the year and proved to be a great success financially for the foundation.

A lot of work went into the day and we thank all those who put in such a big effort to make sure it was a success. The fundraiser will benefit hugely the efforts of the foundation to reach its current 1 million euro target and we wish them well with all their future endeavors.

Tipperary GAA Full Time Employment Opportunity

Tipperary County Board are currently recruiting for the role of Accounts/Administration/IT Assistant in our Thurles office. The Tipperary County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association – Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Coiste Chontae Thiobraid Árann) is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Tipperary and the Tipperary County teams.

The successful candidate must have experience in an accounts position, and administration and enjoy a varied role which will be focused on accounting data input, administration of our County Board Draw and management of our match day scanners and Tap & Go machines, as well as their associated systems online and our match Streaming service. You will be working with the accounts, administration, IT and management team in our Thurles office.
