FBD Insurance County Championships
Round 2 of the FBD Insurance County Senior and Intermediate Football championships took place last weekend and some very entertaining games were played right across the county in weather conditions one would associate with the south of Spain rather than the Premier County. In a once off move the County Competitions Control reintroduced water breaks in all games so as to make sure that all involved would stay hydrated. Prior to the commencement of all games a moments silence was observed as a mark of respect to Dillon Quirke who sadly passed away the previous weekend and in another show of solidarity, most clubs retired the number 11 jersey for the game.
On the field the action commenced on Friday evenine with two games in the senior championship and one game in the intermediate championship. In Golden the 2021 county senior football finalists Clonmel Commercials overcame a stern test from Upperchurch Drombane 2-11 to 0-09. While in Templetuohy the current county champions Loughmore Castleiney had a relatively comfortable 3-14 to 0-08 win over Moycarkey Borris. In the intermediate championship, Cahir was the venue for the clash of Fr Sheehys and Moyle Rovers which resulted in a 0-13 to 1-07 win for Fr Sheehys.
On Saturday, Cahir was once again the venue for the clash of Moyle Rovers and Rockwell Rovers in the senior football championship that resulted in 0-13 to 1-06 win for the South Tipperary side. In Dundrum there was a local derby between Arravale Rovers and Eire Óg Annacarty Donohill which resulted in the braggin rights going to the Tipperary town side who emerged victorious by 2-09 to 0-11. While in Cashel Kilsheelan Kilcash were very comfortable 3-15 to 0-1 winners over Drom & Inch.
Three games took place in the Intermediate football championship on Saturday. In Littleton Fethard defeated JK Brackens by 3-10 to 1-10, in Dundrum Galtee Rovers enjoyed a 3-13 to 0-08 win over Golden Kileacle while in Templetuohy, CJ Kickhams Mullinahone defeated Ballina by 2-10 to 0-08.
On Sunday in the senior football championship JK Brackens were put to a stern test by Balloporeen, before they eventually won by 1-13 to 1-10 in Cashel. Aherlow and Ardfinnan met for their round 2 clash in Bansha with the sides ending all square on a final score of Aherlow 2-09, Ardfinnan 1-12, while in Fethard, Killenaule defeated Cahir by 2-13 to 1-08. in the Intermediate Football Championship there was a Sunday win for Clonmel Commercials over Clonmel Óg in Monroe on a final score of 1-16 to 1-03,
The action this weekend returns to hurling as the remaining round 2 games are all down for decision, there are also two round 3 games being played this weekend with Clonoulty Rossmore taking on Moycarkey Borris and Nenagh Eire Óg playing Kilruane MacDonaghs. Also on Sunday Spórt TG4 will broadcast a live double header in the FBD Senior Hurling championship from FBD Semple Stadium. At 2.30pm the 2022 County champions Loughmore Castleiney will play high flying neighbours and current Mid Senior Hurling Champions JK Brackens and then at 4.15pm its the mouth watering clash of Thurles Sarsfields and Drom & Inch.
Miss Ireland Finals
Miss Tipperary, Megan Kelly who will be representing the premier county in this year’s 75th Jubilee grand final where she hopes to take home the crown of Miss Ireland.
Megan who currently lives in Borrisoleigh has always maintained a staunch support for her county. The motivated nineteen-year-old has been dedicated to helping the organization Jigsaw, a mental health service situated in the heart of Tipperary. Megan hopes to break boundaries and stigmas regarding mental health and normalize and bring awareness that receiving help is okay. Megan attended the Ursuline secondary school in Thurles where she cultivated a strong motivation to find her passion.
Selections took place all over the country to find contestants from each county and the winner from each county will represent their county at the most spectacular ever Diamond Jubilee Miss Ireland show with 1500 in attendance on August 20th at the Royal Theatre Castlebar.
This year the overriding theme for Miss Ireland is ‘Our World Our Future’ with a focus on the environment and global citizenship.
Megan has always held a firm belief in helping others is the way to help ourselves and that the meaning of life is to give life meaning. Megan who has suffered with her mental health from an early age did not have anyone to look up to or relate to regarding mental health so she hopes she can be that person that the younger generation can look up to.
Miss Tipperary’s family hold a very prominent role within Tipperary GAA family, her mother Maggie is the IT Adviser within the Tipperary GAA County board, her father Bobby coaches Hurling and supports her two brothers throughout their matches and who also showcased the new Tipperary GAA home jersey this year which is proudly sponsored by Fiserv.
Megan has also put all her efforts into helping the more vulnerable parts of society as part of her Miss Ireland journey, she is currently fundraising for VarietyIrl to help give a child in need a specialised trike within Tipperary. Specialised Trikes can have such a positive impact on people of all ages. They are not only a fun way to get around but can also offer many other vital physical and mental benefits too!

Megan has also fundraised funds for jigsaw a mental health service which aims to provide support for young people aged 12-25. She completed a 50km walk and raised enough funds to help the charity.
Sport for All funding portal for clubs opens
An online application form is now open to GAA clubs in the 26 counties through which they can apply for Sport Ireland funding to support the delivery of ‘Sports for All’ inclusive activities.
This link is for all clubs in the 26-counties affiliated to the GAA, including Handball, Rounders, and any clubs operating under the ‘One Club’ model (both the Camogie Association and LGFA have separate application forms for stand-alone camogie or LGFA clubs affiliated to their associations.)
The funding is designed to support clubs in the provision of inclusive programmes and supports for people with a disability. The fund is designed to support new inclusive initiates and/or enhance those already established in Gaelic Games clubs.
Clubs can apply for total funding of between €1,000 and €5,000 to support one or all the following three areas:
- Disability Supports Education & Training
- Disability Supports Programme Activation and Delivery
- Disability Supports Small Scale Equipment and Infrastructure.
This application process will close to GAA affiliated clubs at 23.45 on Sunday, August 28th
It is anticipated that an announcement of funding allocations will be made by Sport Ireland in December 2022. Applying does not guarantee that funding will be approved.

Kildare v Tipperary U16 Football All Ireland Shield Final
Venue – Sean Treacy Park Tipperary Town.
Kildare and Tipperary played in Sean Tracey Park Tipperary Town on Saturday 13th August. On a boiling hot day both teams put in a great effort which resulted in a great game of football. Kildare got off to a flying start and after 10 minutes were ahead 1-2 to no score.Tipperary backs got to grips with a very slick Kildare attacking force with the Tipperary full back line of Emmet Bonner Sean Lewis and Liam Kiely excellent Tipperary wing backs Shane Ryan and Cillian Ryan started attacking with intend with Michael Connellen at 6 holding a strong presence in the centre. The Kildare defense were forced to foul a lot resulting in Tipperary getting back into the game Half time score Kildare 1-4 to Tipperary 1-3. Cian O’Brien and Michael O’Reilly were playing really well at midfield with our forwards looking much more threatening Charlie Grace Mark Neville and Cillian Fahey looked to attack the Kildare defense, with our inside forwards of Ciaran oShea Jack Lawlor and Liam freeney also looking dangerous. Our shooting let us down a bit other then that we played very well full time Kildare 1-11. Tipperary 1-7,
