Allianz Football League
The Tipperary senior footballers commence their Allianz football league campaign this Sunday January 30th when they travel to Fraher Field in Dungarvan to play Waterford at 2pm. Manager David Power and his management team will be looking for a positive and winning start to the league, but Dungarvan is never an easy venue to come away on the winning side and with Waterford expected to have a large home support in attendance, we would ask as many Tipperary supporters as possible to go along and support our team. A winning start to the league would give the team great momentum heading into their round 2 game at home to Leitrim on Sunday February 6th. Tickets for this weekends game must be purchased in advance online or at selected Centra & SuperValu stores as no cash will be accepted on the stiles at the venue. The Tipperary senior football team along with the naming of the captain for 2022 will take place this Friday evening at 9pm.
Fiserv Sponsorship
Friday last saw the announcement of a new two year jersey sponsor for Tipperary GAA teams by Fiserv. The sponsorship was launched in FBD Semple Stadium where representatives of Tipperary GAA were joined by Tipperary senior hurler John McGrath and Tipperary senior footballer Conor Sweeney along with representatives of Fiserv. The announcement will see a new Tipperary jersey displaying the Fiserv logo on front and back as well as an image of Michael Hogan on the sleeve. The new Tipperary jersey design has a darker shade of royal blue with a classic collar & takes its inspiration from the All Ireland winning kit of 2001. It is available to pre-order from January the 28th at Elverys and will be on sale from the 10th of Feb. Fiserv has a long history in Ireland, with over 200 people at its flagship technology centre in Nenagh and over 400 in Dublin. It has ambitious plans to add another 300 people across Nenagh and Dublin, as the company drives digital innovation for its clients and consumers. In Ireland it operates a joint venture with AIB called AIB Merchant Services, one of Ireland’s largest payment solution providers and one of Europe’s largest e-commerce acquirers. We look forward to the coming years and hope that the new partnership will be a winning one for all concerned.
Dr Harty Cup Semi Final
Hard luck to Thurles CBS who bowed out of this year’s Harty Cup competition at the semi final stage last weekend. Having gone in to the game as many peoples favourites to progress to the final, they had to give way to a far superior Ard Scoil Ris who ran out 4-18 to 1-12 winners.

An Coiste Bainistíochta/Ard Chomhairle Update
Virtual meetings of both An Coiste Bainistíochta and Ard Chomhairle took place last weekend and the following matters, among others, were decided:
It was agreed to put forward the ‘green’ proposal for the football championship to Congress for consideration, and also to submit a motion to introduce an U19 Minor Intercounty Hurling and Football Championship from 2023 onwards.
It was agreed to allow the decision to include Kerry in Appendix 4 of the Official Guide to stand.
Motions submitted by units relative to the coaching and games funding model (referred to Ard Chomhairle by the Rules Advisory Committee), along with a proposal from the National Games Development Committee, which was presented to members, will now be discussed by counties with a view to the introduction of a new funding model beginning with the financial year 2023.
Introduction to Coaching Gaelic Games Award launched
A course aimed at introducing coaches to Gaelic games will increase the numbers and quality of coaches involved in developing players across the GAA, LGFA and Camogie Association and make it easier for them to acquire coaching credentials. In a significant step, this collaborative project has produced a coach education programme which will ensure that beginner coaches in Gaelic games do not need to take code specific introduction courses.
This new course will be shared cross each of the three Associations and will, for the first time, ensure that beginner coaches of any of our codes come together and engage in a common programme. Coaches operating in clubs that have different codes, particularly One Club model clubs, now can take one coaching course, which is a huge benefit to our volunteer coaches.
Since 2019 the three Gaelic games Associations have worked closely together to develop this new common Introduction to Coaching Gaelic Games or ICGG Award. Launching this new course in Croke Park, the three Associations believe that this approach will ensure that beginner coaches, regardless of their code of choice, will learn from and share with each other and assist their coach development.
This course has been designed to be more interactive and practical than previous introductory courses, with a significant emphasis on coaches learning by doing.
Last year 300 coach developers, from across the three Associations, took part in collaborative upskilling events in preparation for the ICGG programme delivery in 2022 – with a start date to be agreed when pandemic restrictions allow.
The ICGG Award course has been designed to support new coaches develop a solid foundation of knowledge, skills, competencies, and values for coaching the child, youth or adult playing population.
The Introduction to Coaching Gaelic Games award is structured around three key elements:
- The Coach | ‘Being a Coach’, ‘How to Coach’, and ‘Preparation for Planning’.
- The Player | ‘Who are you coaching?’. Whether they are child, youth or adult players, male or female and address the need to be inclusive.
- The Game | a focus on movement for Gaelic games, skill development and games.
This programme will provide coaches with awareness, knowledge and experiences related to:
- Why do you Coach? | Each coach is an individual, and each will bring their own skills and characteristics to our games.
- How do you Coach? | A set of skills and behaviours which coaches can use in games and training sessions
- What do you Coach? | The games and developmental activities that can be used by coaches, and how to structure sessions to hone the skills of players
- Who do you Coach? | The specific players that a coach has within their team/group; looking at age, stages of the player pathway they are at, the importance of inclusivity and how it impacts upon their coaching
Upon completion of this Award, coaches can then choose learning and development opportunities specific to them, their needs, and abilities with specific reference to the stage of the player pathway (see attached graphic) that they coach.
Details on the roll-out and availability of this new coaching course will be made in the coming weeks.
