Westside column - May 25th 2013

posted by pro drominch

There’s something of a calm before the storm on the hurling front at the moment as we bide our time in anticipation of June 9 and that date with Limerick. The county panel has been pruned back to thirty-one as they build up to defend a Munster crown. The Carrick friendly with Waterford last Friday was more noted for the return of Tony Browne than the hurling spectacle. This coming Sunday the team has a final work-out against Galway at Cloughjordan.
Overall it will be a nervous weekend for the Tipp management with four significant club engagements up North and another pair down South. Avoiding injuries will be top of the wish list, something Kilkenny are struggling with at the moment as we read of further problems for Messrs (no pun) Fennelly and Rice.

I missed the Carrick game but have been assured that there was nothing of major significance to report. Tipperary won narrowly after using eight substitutes in what was diplomatically described as a useful work-out. Translated that means it had all the intensity of a training spin, which is what you expect from these games.
The panel is now slimmed down to thirty-one bodies after a management cull removed five or six who’d been onboard through most of the spring. It’s a tough, ruthless business where players who have slogged hard through the winter and spring now find themselves surplus to requirements as we approach the championship. There’s not much room for sentiment as the management opts for what it sees as the best available panel. Present day economics have to be factored in too as the board tries to trim costs.
There are no major surprises in the adjustments that have been made, though I’m sure some of those who’ve lost out might see it differently. Timmy Hammersley has had a very chequered career with the county panel drifting in and out of favour over recent years. He came on as a replacement as recently as the league semi-final against Dublin but now finds himself out of the loop once more. I suspect the arrival of forwards like John O’Dwyer and Jason Forde shoved him down the ranking this year and that ultimately led to his removal.
Hammersley’s club colleague, John O’Neill, had drifted off the scene in recent times, partly due to injury, and he’s now outside the panel also. That leaves just John O’Keeffe of the Clonoulty contingent still onboard.
Others not included in the latest panel that’s profiled on the county website include Adrian Ryan, Sean Curran, Denis Maher and Seamus Hennessy. People will be disappointed that the Kilruane man has not recovered adequately from ongoing injury problems. Since his underage days he hasn’t got a decent run at establishing himself, being dogged by injuries. Sarsfields’ Denis Maher was on the fringes of the panel in recent months but his form hasn’t really been steady enough to pin down a place on the panel. There are days when he has tongues wagging about his potential but then there are other days when doubts set in.
I’m sure the management would be quick to point out that any panel isn’t set in stone and instead faces ongoing review. As proof of that you have the inclusion of Kieran Bergin and James Barry of Upperchurch in the latest list. Bergin was the ‘springer’ for the league final and Barry has been hovering on the edges since his underage days. The man from the ‘ Church has a neat haul of All Ireland medals from minor, U21 and intermediate; a senior would complete the suit.

In other news regarding the county panel there seems to be optimism that Paddy Stapleton will be fit to face Limerick – indeed some suggest that he might line-out for Borrisoleigh in their North quarter-final against Roscrea at the weekend. There’s less optimism regarding Lar Corbett. Anyway the team has a final friendly this coming Sunday against Galway at Cloughjordan and then all focus will be on Limerick on June 9.
On the club scene Mid and West divisions now have their semi-finals in place for June 16 with some sorting out still to be completed in the North and South. The Mid completed the process last weekend when Moycarkey sent Holycross packing. A subsequent draw for those semis then paired Upperchurch with Drom and Loughmore against Moycarkey. On all known form followers will anticipate a Drom/Loughmore final.
I saw the Moycarkey/Holycross game on Sunday and didn’t see anything to suggest that either is on the brink of a major breakthrough. It was poor quality fare with Moycarkey always the more likely winners though hampered by an incredible total of nineteen wides over the hour. Holycross had their share of wayward shots too hitting fourteen by my reckoning which makes for a grand total of thirty-three wides. Yes, it was that type of game and what a contrast to the crisp quality we saw the previous week in Templemore; even within the Mid division standards seem to vary widely.
One of the main differences between the sides on Sunday was Moycarkey’s Kieran Morris. He was a county minor in ’08 and an U21 three years later and really showed something extra in this game. He scored eleven of their eighteen point total (three from play) and was the one consistent ball winner to constantly worrying the Holycross defence. In fact he drew enough attention to be taken out of the game near the end with a hefty frontal tackle. I thought the offender there was lucky to escape with a yellow card.
Moycarkey led by six at the break but with all those wides they failed to put Holycross to the sword and when Donncha Duggan got the game’s only goal for the Abbeysiders midway through the second there were only three points separating them.  Still in the end Moycarkey deservedly got through by four though they’ll face a testing time now against Loughmore in the semi.
In the South there’s an important double-decker at Fethard on Saturday where Davins face Mullinahone and Killenaule square up to Swans. For Davins it’s last chance saloon; they need a win and even then will depend on a favourable result in the final game when Mullinahone play Killenaule. If you were a betting man you’d wager against the red side of Carrick surviving.
The North has a full set of quarter-finals on the agenda, led by those old foes Nenagh and Toomevara. They’ve had some battles in past years though I suspect a bit of the sting has gone out of that rivalry since both sides have slipped in rating. In fact the North division, despite having thirteen senior sides, is no longer the feared powerhouse of Tipperary hurling, especially since the ‘greyhounds’ lost their aura of invincibility. Portroe are the reigning champions and they’ll fancy going a step further at the expense of Jason Forde and Silvermines. I think the Roscrea/Borrisoleigh clash might be one of the most interesting; Templederry and Kildangan fight out the remaining quarter-final.

Cappawhite readers of last week’s report on their win over Cashel K.C. were delighted to be told that they’re not just free of relegation for 2013 but can relax next year too in the knowledge that they’re assured of top-sixteen ranking and with it another relegation-free season. I hate to be bursting the bubble but the reality, I’m afraid, is quite different. They’re free of relegation this year alright but if they lose their West semi to Clonoulty they’ll then have to win a round in the county series to qualify for top tier in 2014.
It’s amazing how this club structure was voted in last January and yet has so much confusion and uncertainty surrounding its small-print details. Actually the designers of this new system pulled off a major stroke by getting through a structure that won’t properly kick-in until 2014. Because it wasn’t applying immediately there was no focusing of minds on the detail and its only later this year and next season that the true implications will hit home. And for many clubs the implications are serious.
For the last time let’s spell out what will happen this year and then the implications for 2014. The sixteen teams who don’t make their divisional semi-finals go into a round one draw for the county championship. The eight losers there enter the O’Riain Cup, which also has relegation attached. The eight winners from round one of the county championship play-off with the eight losing divisional semi-finalists and it’s the winners of this round who will be guaranteed places in the top-tier next season. Those eight winners will join the eight divisional finalists to make up the top-sixteen who will play out for the Dan Breen.
Still confused? Well, it will become clear as events unfold. With two sides being relegated from 2014 onwards the blunt reality is that a lot of the present senior teams will face demotion in the next few years. For some, I suspect, the consequences will be drastic, unless they enthusiastically embrace intermediate hurling. The system could potentially be most damaging to divisions like the South and West because if they lose a few teams their championships could become unviable.

P.S. The published RTE schedule includes no live coverage of the Munster senior hurling semi-finals.  With so few quality hurling games available, and the Munster series likely to have some of the best of them, surely Montrose and Ryle Nugent could have planned better. Then again I wouldn’t expect a rugby man to understand.

P.P.S. I was smiling to myself watching the Late Late Show and the retelling of that old anecdote about Jack Lynch and the Tipp man who warned him in a Munster final that if he wasn’t careful there’d be a bye-election in Cork. The quip was credited this time Tony Reddin, sitting in the audience and looking remarkable for a man of ninety-three. The funny thing is that I’ve also heard that verbal dig being credited to several other players over the years such as ‘The Rattler’ Byrne and little Jimmy Maher among others. So who did say it? Indeed was it ever said? Sounds like something that was thought up afterwards and sounded too amusing to be let go. Why let fact interfere with a good story?

Useful Information

Since 2000, Kerry have drawn as many matches in the Munster Senior Football Championship than they have lost, 5 draws (all v Cork) as compared to 5 defeats in 35 matches played.

Tipperary have lost their first game in the Munster Senior Football Championship in the last 9 seasons. Tipperary’s last Munster SFC victory came in the first round in 2003 when helped by 11 points by Declan Browne, the Premier County defeated Waterford at Walsh Park by 0-18 to 1-12. Cork native Denis Walsh was the Waterford manager on the day.

Kerry had the worst scoring record in the Allianz Football League Division 1, racking up an aggregate of 72 points (average of just over 10 per game). This compares to an aggregate of 97 points for Cork and 129 points for Division 1 champions Dublin.

Limerick topped the Allianz Football League Division 4 table despite scoring just 78 points during their 7 games (11 points per match). Only London (75 points) scored less. Limerick’s success was based on their stingy defending with a concession of 71 points. Tipperary were the top scorers in the division with 106 points on aggregate (15+ per game) but conceded 90 points. Waterford (For 90, Against 96) and Clare (For 96, Against 86) were the other Munster counties in Division 4.

There was an 18% decrease in the number of scores in the 2012 Munster Senior Football Championship as compared to 2011 (33 scores per game versus 27) but overall the trend is up over recent years – 2008 (21 scores per game), 2009 (24 scores per game), 2010 (28 scores per game), 2011 (33 scores per game), 2012 (27 scores per game).

Since 2000, Limerick have won as many matches in the Munster Senior Football Championship (10) than Tipperary (2), Clare (6) and Waterford (2) combined. Only 3 of those 10 Limerick victories have come at home, against Waterford in 2004 (1-18 to 0-7), versus Clare in 2006 (2-5 to 0-8) and against Waterford in 2012 (2-12 to 0-7). Limerick have a home tie with Cork in the 2013 first round on May 25th at the Gaelic Grounds Limerick.

Waterford have won 2 matches in the Munster Senior Football Championship since 1988. Both victories have come at the expense of Clare in games played at Fraher Field Dungarvan – a 1-6 to 0-7 victory in 2007 and a 1-10 to 0-9 win in 2010.

Limerick’s Ian Ryan was the top scorer in the 2012 Munster Senior Football Championship with 1-17 (0-11 frees) in two matches. Colm Cooper (Kerry) with 0-9 (0-5 frees) and Colm O’Neill with 0-9 (0-3 frees) finished joint second.

TIPPERARY ALLIANZ CUMANN NA MBUNSCOL REPORT MONDAY 20TH MAY BY JOHN MANLEY

SCOIL AILBHE EMERGE VICTORIOUS IN ROINN A THRILLER

On Wednesday 15th of March in The Garda Pitch in Templemore St. Colmcille’s Templemore and Scoil Ailbhe Thurles locked horns in the Cumann na MBunscol Under 13 Roinn A hurling. This was a repeat of the 2012 county final and was eagerly anticipated. Those hoping for a repeat of the excitement of 2012 were not disappointed as these schools served up a feast of hurling for those in attendance. With both sides having recorded victories against Nenagh C.B.S, the honour of topping the group was at stake. On a morning that produced anything but Summer like weather, the clouds parted and the sun emerged as referee Martin Ryan got the game underway. Scoil Ailbhe won the toss and chose to play with the aid of the stiff breeze in the first half. It was, however St. Colmcille’s who began the brighter and went on the attack from the off. Goal chances were spurned and after the opening five minutes which consisted of sustained pressure from the Templemore men they had to be content with a 0-1 to 0-0 advantage after a Nick Keane free. Having weathered an early storm Scoil Ailbhe found their rhythm and began to take over. The Thurles men dominated the following ten minutes and had three goals and four points on the board before St. Colmcilles registered their second score, a point coming from the stick of Aaron Quinlan. At half time the scoreline read Scoil Ailbhe 3-4 St. Colmcilles 0-2. The old cliche of a hurling match being a ‘game of two halves’ was certainly appropriate here as St. Colmcilles emerged a more determined bunch for the second half. The Templemore men tore into the challenge from the off and by the mid way point of the second half they had eaten considerably into the Thurles lead with a goal scored by Ciarán Byrne while two points from Nick Keane and another from Darragh Doyle meant that St. Colmcilles were not going down without a fight. Jack Lanigan responded with a point for Scoil Ailbhe but when St. Colmcilles were awarded a free 20 metres from the Scoil Ailbhe goal the shout went down for Darragh Doyle to travel up from full back to take the free. It was the right call as he unleashed an unstoppable shot to the roof of the net and all of a sudden there was only a goal between the teams. With only minutes remaining and St. Colmcilles pushing for the equaliser, the Scoil Ailbhe boys stood firm to everything the home side had to throw at them. Ciarán Hoctor registered another point for St. Colmcilles and all in attendance wondered would the goal they needed come? A goal did come, however it was for Scoil Ailbhe who caught the St. Colmcilles backline napping, the full forwarded fielded a long delivery before dispatching the ball to the net with the last puck of the game. The final score read Scoil Ailbhe 4-5 St. Colmcilles 2-6. Scoil Ailbhe who have been setting the yardstick in Roinn A for many years now showed that they are once again the team to beat for 2013 while last year’s runners up St. Colmcilles proved that they are realistic contenders to win their first Roinn A hurling title. Nobody would be one bit surprised if both these schools ended up contesting the County Final in Semple Stadium in a month’s time, however Carrick C.B.S and St. Peters and Pauls who are also in the semi finals will fancy their chances also. Best for Scoil Ailbhe on the day were Kieran Moloney and Jack Lanigan while Conor Cadell, Diarmuid Delaney and James Corcoran were excellent for St. Colmcilles.

SCOIL MOCHAOMHOG NAOFA PROVE TOO STRONG FOR GALLANT TIPPERARY CBS BY JACK MORRISSEY 5TH CLASS SCOIL MOCHAOMHOG NAOFA
It was Wednesday 1st May and we were all set to play Tipperary CBS. The match was on in Holycross at 1.15. The lads were hopping of their seats with the excitement. We were supposed to leave Two Mile Borris at 20 past 12 but the bus eventually arrived at 12.45. We got there at 1.00 and had to get togged out quickly. There was a scramble to get the jerseys. The match started around 1.15. John Ryan, the referee, threw the ball in, but Scoil Mochaomhog got off to a poor start and went four points down. Darren Flood responded with two points and five minutes later Max Hackett went on a speeding run and buried the ball into the top of the net. Tipperary came back immediately with a point. Soon after Bill Hackett shot as quick as lighting into the bottom left corner. This left the half time score 2-2 to 0-5.The second half restarted and Bill Hackett got another great goal. Tipperary responded with a quick point. Minutes later a high ball was lobbed into Bill Hackett who finished with a great flick to the net. Bill Hackett was having a stormer and he soon scored another brilliant goal. Tipperary recovered from these setbacks and fought back with three goals and two points. By this time the crowd were on their feet from the nerves. Darren Flood responded with one goal and a point. Max Hackett and Diarmuid Maher made sure of the result in the final minutes when they scored a point each. Final score 6-5 to3-7 to Scoil Mochaomhog. Well done to both teams on a great game of hurling.

SCOIL MOCHAOMHOG NAOFA SEE OFF SPIRITED HOLYCROSS SIDE BY MAX HACKETT 5TH CLASS SCOIL MOCHAOMHOG NAOFA
It was Friday the third of May 2013 and the Borris boys were ready to take on a strong Holycross side. We left school at around 12.30 and got to the field in Littleton at around 1.00. We warmed up after Mr McCullagh had named out the starting team. We took up our positions as the referee, Willie Clohessy, threw in the ball. Pat Hackett won the throw in and played it up to the forwards where Sean Mockler got the ball and put it over the bar. Holycross got back on top and scored a point. Next Pat Hackett got the ball, laid it off to Diarmaid Maher and he put it over the bar. Holycross got on the end of the puck out and played it into the forwards where a player from Holycross got it and put it over. The ball came out once again and was won by a Holycross player and then he took a shot which made it all the way to the net. At the end of the half Holycross were deservedly in the lead by 1-02 to 0-02.The second half was soon under way. The ref threw in the ball where it was won by Max Hackett who played it up the field to Darren Flood. Darren got the ball and struck it over the bar. The puck out went out the field and into the midfield and was won by Borris .It was passed into Bill Hackett and he scored a terrific goal. The ball came out the field again to David Ryan who got to the ball first and scored a goal. Holycross won a penalty and scored with an unstoppable shot. The ball was pucked out to where it was won again by Max Hackett and he passed it to Pat Hackett and he played the ball up the field to David Ryan and he got another goal. The ball came down to Holycross but Pat Hackett won the ball from Holycross and Max Hackett got the pass from Pat and put it over. The last puckout of the game was broken out to Bill Hackett and he scored the final point. The full time score was 3-05 to 2-02 to Scoil Mochaomhog Naofa.

Tony Browne appears to have ended any lingering doubts surrounding his intercounty future after appearing for Waterford as a second half substitute in a challenge against Tipperary last night.Browne, who will be 40 in July, made his first appearance of 2013 for the Déise as neighbours Tipp scored a three-point win in a high-scoring encounter at Davin Park, Carrick-on-Suir.

Browne, however, will struggle to break into a strong-looking Waterford half-back line as Jamie Nagle, Michael ‘Brick’ Walsh and captain Kevin Moran performed capably last evening.  In attack, Seamus Prendergast built on a solid League campaign with a haul of 1-3 against Eamon O’Shea’s Tipp.  And Prendergast’s second half goal put Waterford three points clear, 1-16 to 1-13, in a see-saw encounter.

But Tipperary were back level when sub Shane Bourke netted with 12 minutes left and the sides were level twice more before the finish.  Late points from Johnny Ryan, Noel McGrath and Brian O’Meara sealed victory for Tipp in a useful workout that served as part of the Maurice Davin commemoration events.

A bumper crowd, estimated in the region of 2,500, watched Waterford edge a point clear by half-time – 0-13 to 1-9.  Tipp netted through Pa Bourke in the 20th minute to move 1-6 to 0-7 in front but Michael Ryan’s Waterford finished the half strongly as Prendergast impressed close to goal.  Before throw-in, spectators observed a minute’s silence in memory of former GAA president Paddy Buggy, who died this week.
